No. 200 arrives

I've had a vacation. It lasted less than 24 hours but felt like 2 whole days and left me wishing I had another 24 hours so that I could enjoy a 4-day vacation for a change. I feel refreshed and exhausted all at the same time, and it's lovely.

It's raining beautifully as well.

The thought of office tomorrow is making me mentally tired, but after a well-spent 22 hours, I think I should temporarily surrender the right to complain. So even if I end up yawning a few extra yawns, I'm postponing my usual I-wish-I-didn't-have-to-work grumbles to the next post.

Btw... this post will be Happy No. 200. Congratulations, looks of awe, envy & admiration, and wolf whistles will be welcomed and appreciated.

2 posts to 200th post

So Best Friend met Boyfriend, and everyone seems to have hit it off well. I re-met a dude who's a true-blue storyteller at heart. I be happy.

Everybody does seem to be getting married this year. I got another announcement from another friend. It's all kinda freaky now... the marriage card -- so many at the same time.

Am almost reaching my 200th post and this milestone has come superfast. I'm happy. Writing almost-daily has its plusses. Unlike in the case of Post No. 100, I've put no chaap on myself to write a kickass post. But I have the fight in me to get to Post No. 300 even quicker. Watch this space dearies.

Day 56

Began with memories of heavy rain early in the morning, and I snuggled under the covers and caught an extra hour of shut-eye. Few things are as wonderful as waking up in the morning on a work-day and finding that you still have some time to kill before the alarm finally rings.

I woke up 2 hours later, knowing that I would be running late again. But no hurries today. And no reason for the relaxed behaviour. Just the state of mind.

The rain in Kolkata does that to you. And rain it did. I waded through water for close to fifteen minutes in search of an auto. And then stopped one in the middle of the road. Carrying an umbrella as protection from the rain is in vain if you end up sitting in an auto rickshaw after that. The water pours in through the open side, wetting most of the sleeves. And even when you reach office sopping wet, and stand under the hand-dryer in a desperate bid to dry off before heading for the freezer that is your office, you know that you wouldn't want to commute any other way. Long live the rains, the floods, the troublesome umbrellas, and the indefatigable auto rickshaws.

Of course, the whole day spent in office has been rather cold. Even though the jeans had been rolled up, they got wet in the flood, and the floaters had also got wet, and then cold, as the office AC was in chill-pill mode. The coldness remained right till 4.30 p.m., when the jeans finally did manage to dry off.

One and a half hours later, I was back on the road, trying to beat the rain and get home. On the way, my auto stalled, then started, then stalled, then finally started again. And while crossing a road, my convex umbrella decided to concave in thanks to the wind. But I managed to set it right again.

The rest of the way home was a happy though mucky walk, and I was actually singing (humming rather) in the rain. The song in question was 'Drops of Jupiter' (kinda apt-ish for the weather, though I didn't make the connection till just now).

This was followed by Kaathi rolls for dinner (I chomped down 3) and one bhaar of mishti doi each. Blogger Onnesha thinks I eat all the time. I suppose I do.

Day 47 and 48

This is to bring the blog up-to-date. Missing a day is usually not a problem unless the day is an overpoweringly happening one. And Days 45 and 46 weren't the types that you can dispense with in a paragraph or two. Thankfully, the last two days have been fairly boring. I worked so much and so hard yesterday that I was actually wondering what I did with myself last evening. The answer: I worked myself to amnesia.

Today was a bandh. This morning it rained. Normal people would have woken up in the morning, shut the window to keep out the rain, smiled in sleepy joy, then turned over and gone back to sleep for three to four hours.

I am not normal people. I woke up, shut the window to keep out the rain, smiled in sleepy joy, then turned over and slept fitfully for barely another hour. Media whore you see. I had office. The white ambassador with a press tag came to pick me up from the police station a few buildings away. And off I went. Wasted the whole day (from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.) at an air-contioned (Read: freeeeeezing) beige-painted office room with a lizard peeking out from behind Shreya's computer. Some day, a future prospective employer shall ask: "What challenges did you face in your last office?" Answer: "We had to deal with slimy reptiles of various kinds... Not all of them were human."

Day 45 (a day late)

Chicken and rice for lunch. Getting drenched in the rains for tea. Meeting Shutapa for beer and dinner. Girl talk and boy issues for during-dinner conversation. Drunk waiter who takes forever to bring menu, then order, and finally, bill. But food at Silver Grill rocks. Pre-meeting with Shutapa, got wet at Chandni and kept getting wet all the way to Park Street. Shutz also decided to get wet in the rain while waiting for me. Was very nice meeting her after ages. Well, not that long -- met her in Feb this year. We drank and ate and drank and ate some more... and then she dropped me home :D

A good day overrall.

There's lots to write about today. But I'm too tired to do justice to it, so will keep it for tomorrow's post. Then I will bring blog up to date also. For now, tata and gnite.

Day 33

The thunder and lightning kept me away from the computer last night. But what I want to know is how Prasun Mukherjee got himself entangled in the plastic sheets. I wasn't watching the match yesterday, so I would really like to know how on earth he got there.

I'm really not in the mood to type today. Though my story finally got approved. It will probably get uploaded tomorrow. Will put up link then.

Am wondering what to read next. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Though I am kinda veering towards the pulp writers of the world. Light, quick, and more-or-less brainless reads are what I'm looking for. But don't suggest Chetan Bhagat please. Have a mental block against his books for some unknown, inexplicable reason.

Day 30

And this calls for a chocolate cake from Cakes (the one next to Kookie Jar on Rawdon Street). I will pick one up on Saturday.

I am feeling very goodlooking today. Very very. The haircut rocks man! It's not as Bon Jovi as it was last year. Actually, it's a non-Bon-Jovi replica of last year's cut, but looks very very pretty :D Am my own biggest fan today :D

Today has been a very long day, but it ended well. Had company on way back home yet again... though from time to time I do like going it alone. (During those stressful days in M'bai, my two-hour commute doubled up as me-time, and I usually went back home feeling all is right with the world. Nothing like a long, solitary bus ride or a leisurely walk to clear the mind or a ride in a radio-loving auto rickshaw to bring the music back into your head.)

Now, barely two minutes after getting on to the auto, the streetlights went off. Powercut! And it covered a pretty large area. Ma called from home to find out if I was by any chance stuck in the lift. I was not. I was seated in an auto on Freeschool Street.

The loadshedding lasted throughout the journey. And then I spied with my not-so-leeteel eyes, lightning. Rain rain, stay away, at least until I get home. The little droplets started letting go of their cloudy abode almost immediately, but only two and three at a time, and these glided down rather than crash to the ground pulled by the evil force of gravity. The brilliant thing was that this lasted till just after I opened the door and walked into home-sweet-home. A minute and a half later, there was much rain, albeit short-lived.

Oh, and the power cut? The lights came back the minute I reached my building gate. :)

So all's well that ends well.

And did I mention that the new haircut rocks? :P

Day 25

Yay! In another 25 days it will be Day 50 and less than a week before my happy b'day to me! :D

Tomorrow all us folks from office are going out for dinner at 5.30 p.m. Yeah, it does give early dinners a run for their money, and I'm not convinced we'll be served food at that time, but the people on my team come from places like Chandernagore (is that the spelling?) and Habra (is that it?). I think I'm supposed to dress up a little (just a little) better and go. Did I mention that I mostly dislike dressing up?

Btw... I am slowly but surely becoming opinionated - a great leap forward for a completely non-opinionated person. Today I was upset at SRK's not performing because it is Robi Tagore's birthday and because his Bollywood jhatkas would be against our culture. What made it worse was that people at office (well, person actually) agreed that King Khan dancing to Woh haseena woh neelam pari would be uncultural. Jaata! Not like Robi Dadu was a Jesus Christ or a Prophet Mohammad or something to that effect.

Bongs and their preoccupation with the ancient past. I'm sure Robi Dadu himself would have liked partying at Venom and shaking his beard to the tunes of Dard-e-Disco. More importantly, I think business is far more important than culture (Generalizing dangerously, but don't take it out of context). And SRK dancing is bound to bring in far more moolah (NOT the blogger) than local artistes putting in their two-paise bit. Uff! Bongs and their kaalchaar!

On a different note, I got wet in the rain. Again. This year, barring twice, I have managed to get wet each time it has rained. I think this will end up being a good year, and by the time December 31 comes around, I can look back and sigh in joy. And then I'll go grab some Thunderbolt beer at Oly. Or wherever.

Btw... given that we are all gung-ho about the blog-meet-to-be, there's an example of a blog meet on ParisDailyPhoto. Check the 8 Mai 2008 entry (individual posts are non-clickable). If only we weren't meeting in the height of summer and Kolkata were Paris, we could have gone on a nice scenic picnic armed with lotsa food, Pepsi, and more.

Day 21

And I assume the blog-daily habit has been formed. Yay! :)

No weird lizard/other reptile/insect coincidences happened today though I double-checked the area around my office CPU before settling down on the chair. Legs were placed safely on the chair, away from any camouflage-master garden lizards.

Lunch was Chicken Wanton Noodle Soup and Chilli Roast Pork (dry). Met the mother. Took off to pick up the sister from a b'day party at Forum. And...

And :) ... found a tee that I fell in love with at first sight. It's a little big, but who cares... it's red in the front and striped at the back and says "Rock Queen" amidst a bunch of other music-related graffiti. Haven't studied the tee properly yet, but Sugababes finds mention on it -- of that I'm sure.

I like that it's been raining every evening since yesterday. Today I got wet because Ma and I had to run up to cover the bird cages on the terrace. Here is a picture of the birdcage by yours truly:

As luck would have it, the power went off just seconds before the storm, and I had to go rescue this man who got stuck in the lift (Read: call the darwan to unlock the lift). It was his fault for coming to meet Ma at a time when she had specifically told him not to. I guess he's going to do away with his late-evening visits from now on. Thereafter, I had to scramble up the stairs in the dark by which time the rain had already started. As it turns out, Ma is better at covering the birds than I am, so I was left shining the torch while Ma did all the hard work.

There was something else that I wanted to type about, but it has completely slipped my mind. So adios for the time being. And for all in Kolkata, enjoy the Nor'westers while they last.

It Rained Today

and I got wet getting off the auto. I caught one random Chinese girl and made her share her umbrella with me. She was quite sweet about it.

I'm soon going to be off the contract and on the payroll, Boss said so today.

Today threatened to be one of those days where I would keep looking at the clock and hoping that the drudgery and depression would tick-tock away quickly. I guess I wished hard enough and by the time half the day was done, the miserable-ness had receded to the background. It'll appear a little later, but it rained today. Life is always good after the rains.

Rain in the City and Other Things

19th Feb:
Went out with Madz. Ate at Pizza Hut. The third part of our bitchy trio ditched us at the last minute. Shopped after lunch at Forum and South City. I have been shopping a lot of late. Guess I'm making up for all the days that I didn't. I eyed a pair of sneakers at Bata. Price tag: 1299/- I'm not sure I'm ready to spend that much. Maybe I'll tell the father to buy it for me. What are fathers for after all, other than indulging their daughters.

Spoke to Shreya and told her that she's too young at 23 to get married. Other people don't seem to think so and the poor thing has been worried and unhappy.

Boyfriend did not fall asleep while talking to me last night. He's been dozing off quite often over our phone conversations. A worrying sign perhaps. It's Happy-Four-Months today btw.

20th Feb:
Being a homebody today. Have lots of work lined up.

On a brighter note, it just rained in Kol for about 15 minutes, and the sun is already out. I must have said this before, but nothing makes me happier than the rains. Almost nothing at least. Dairy Milk chocolates and rain -- my top two mood enhancers!

Ate a big packet of chips between last night and now. I'm getting fat slowly but surely. How do I know this? My clothes are not fitting me. What am I going to do about it? I'm anti-dieting. So all I can do is spend my days thinking about exercise. Maybe someday I will start doing sit-ups or something. For the time being, at least I'm not looking like an anorexic chick on a poster which cries "Feed the Hungry Millions".

There are red "biting" ants on my bed. Again. I really must stop eating chips on the bed.

Added at 5:38 P.M.:
Just got a call from this publishing house that I had applied to. I said no. And now I am (unnecessarily) stressing over it. There are many good reasons why I said "No". But the worry emerged and has decided to get stuck on me. I think I am destined to be a worrywart. Somebody once looked at the many light crisscrosses on my palm and asked me if I worry/think too much. I guess I do. Though the lightness of the lines could also be due to low haemoglobin. The doc told me that one.

I'm also rather unsympathetic. Not mean. Very nice. Just unsympathetic.

And I still hate weddings. Almost as much as I hate job interviews. Wondering if something is seriously wrong with me. For a few days I wondered if I had social anxiety or something. I don't think I do. But there is definitely something not right with me.

A Good Day

Today has been a good day. After a long time, I have been smiling to myself and walking around with a feeling of everything's-gonna-be-all-right. My theme song for the day? Living on a Prayer

This has been a long, never-ending January with more than its share of stress, confusion, boredom, insecurity, unhappiness, and more of their ilk. Everytime I looked at the calendar, February seemed light years away. But it is finally within kissing distance. Yay!

Things are looking up again. Nothing bothers me as much as stagnancy. I am glad to be on the move once more. I like change. I like novelty. And my new haircut seems to have given rise to a new me :)

Good haircuts tend to do that. They make you feel lighter (maybe because a load has been shed from your fragile/not-so-fragile skull) and righter. Sometime last year, a cute, I-think-gay guy with a cool near-the-lip diamond stud called Shane gave me the most wonderful haircut. I felt like a girl Jon Bon Jovi for weeks after that. Today's haircut is nothing compared to that, but I look less Tarzan-like and more Walt-Disney's-Little-Mermaid-like. And I'm happy :)

I got THE CALL that had me on tenterhooks for the last 3 weeks. Now I'm relieved and heaving many sighs of relief.

Have eaten 2 lunches today. Am full and contented as a result. Nothing like a full stomach.

It rained this afternoon, and the world (Kolkata, at least) has become wonderful again. There is a nip in the air and a whiff of change in the breeze. The slushy streets that make me want to get my feet mucked up. The tree leaves are still shedding the little drops of sky that surprised them this afternoon. I went out in the rain this afternoon. I shoved my umbrella in my bag and let the pitter-patter raindrops tell their knock-knock jokes on my head. Life has been lovely since :)

No More Rain?

The sun came out after three days. Everybody smiled. Finally no more rain. The sun will take all the dirty puddles away. The roads will be dry and dusty soon. Maybe Ma Durga won't have to travel by boat. The lorry should manage to bring her and all her children and sidekicks without any glitches. The stray dogs won't have to swim around. The crows will finally fly into a blue sky. The stars shall no longer have to be on house arrest. They will be able to take a peek at this wonderful Kolkata of ours. Windows will no longer have to remain shut. The nip in the air shall take a morning walk into our homes. The smell of wet clothes shall be farewell-ed away. That pair of jeans will finally dry itself.

No more puddles to splash around in. No more paper boats to sail away into sewers on the other side of town. No more fumbling with the folding umbrella. No more romantic walks down people-free roads. No more cursing at the Scorpio for splashing water on already drenched bus-stop people. No more shivering in AC rooms. No more grumbling about the weather. No more complaining about the lack of transport. A handful of fewer complaints about the municipality and the drains from pre-Partition days. No more predictions about how much longer it will keep on raining. No more chips and chai. No more bunking school. No more half-days at work.

The sun came out today. After three days. Everyone smiled.

I wouldn't mind a little more rain. But then, that's just me.
***

PS: I loved how the rain stopped for a little while after Team India's win yesterday. Just enough time for some serious bomb-bursting and midnight processions through flooded streets.

Rain on a Lazy Sunday

It has been a lazy, rainy Sunday. It started raining last night and continued through the morning, afternoon, evening, and it looks like the raindrops will be falling all night.

I love it.

There is nothing like not having to go out on a rainy Kolkata day. Just veg out at home and think and read and have highly mustard-oily jhaal muri and a handful of microwave popcorn and act the clown and sing stupid songs opera-style and play cards after ages.

This is the life.

If only tomorrow wasn't Monday, life would really be perfect. :P
***

Am loving Pamuk's The White Castle. He shoots out all these deep philosophical thoughts seemingly without batting an eyelid. Its an easy read that is based in historic times, in an exotic locale, and is full of sultans and pashas and people who look alike enough to be twins. (That's actually a pretty bad way to sum it up. I'll try doing a better job when I finish reading it. Am already more than half-way through. Should manage by tomorrow.)

P.S.: Couldn't go clothes shopping today. Too much rain. And too few Sundays are as lazy as this one to get wasted doing anything other than lazy-fying. I wish I could wrangle a few more hours to today.

Braving the Puddles

Getting out of the pajamas and into the jeans was a good change.

Had been raining all day. Was thinking of worming out of the plans (as usual). But the call of coffee and girl chat was too strong. When I left the house though, the sun was shining over all the Kol streets (at least over the Kol street that I took). Took an auto. Sat in it for 5 minutes. The rains re-started. Got off auto while it was still raining. Struggled with umbrella. Contemplated bunking the umbrella idea and just letting the raindrops fall on my head. Forgot to stop struggling with umbrella. Lecherous man offered to help. Ignored him. Struggled more. And voila! No more raindrops on my head!

Met Jes. Braved the puddles to go and drink black currant smoothies (with ice-cream please). Chatted about people, work, some more people. Looked disapprovingly at the three noisy, spoilt kids running around the place. Checked out some Hot Wheels cars (I love Hot Wheels). Did some window shopping. Looked at tees, earrings, shoes, bags. Peeped at the price tags. Stopped looking at tees, earrings, shoes, bags. Felt poor. Grumbled. Braved the puddles again. Had fun. Should do this again sometime.

Nice weather today. Rainy. Moisture floating in on the breeze. Perfect, no-sweat, Kol monsoon weather. Love it.

Escaping Through the Window and More

I feel like running away somewhere... Just me and Thomas (my cat) maybe... Just sit somewhere and think about God-knows-what. Thomas does that all day anyway. Maybe I just need a little practice and a lower workload.

Haven't been sitting on my favorite window for two days because of the rains. The rains come down and my window leaks. Sit there for too long while it's raining and you're bound to get wet. It's not raining now so have plonked myself there. I can see so many people just sitting/standing downstairs looking around doing nothing.

There's this man standing next to the egg-store thinking of crossing the road: "Should I cross? Should I just dilly-dally here for a little longer?" I turn my head to look at the fellow sitting outside the dhobi's shop digging his nose. By the time I turn back, the dilly-dallier is gone.

There goes another old man, wheeling his cycle down the road with really heavy-looking bags weighing down his run-down mode of transport. What is the point, I wonder, of having a bicycle if you're not going to ride it? And even before I finish wondering, he's on his bicycle and off to work. I think he's carrying potatoes in those sacks of his.

Have to babysit my baby sister for a while now. It has been two minutes and she is already making a mess. She's opened the jigsaw puzzle box and is creating great chaos on my already messy bed. In twenty minutes I will be chasing her away, and she won't want to go. Threats, shouts, and pleas will follow. And finally I will drag her out of my room and shut my door! As usual!

My boss has been pleased with me for meeting the deadlines this month. Last month everything had been too disorganised. My guess is that he is quite relieved now. "Whew," he must be saying to himself, and flicking away an imaginary sweat drop from his air-conditioned brow. He works very hard; that man really does! Every two days I get a project from him at about 3:23 a.m. in the morning! There's a reason why he's the Boss after all!

....

I'm part of a very noisy family. Taken one by one, we are all quiet fellows and fellees. But put us all together, and get ready for chaos, confusion, and commotion. What with all the screeches and babies dancing in circles and dogs chasing cats and cats stealing bones and people ringing doorbells and dogs barking at the door and people pushing out the dogs to open the door.

Today's a Sunday and I worked all day… and I mean ALL day! One of the side effects of working from home and taking one day off mid-week to go and get sloshed! But I'm free now and am finally feeling like it is Sunday.

The smiley face persists. I hope I don't end up looking like my warped Orkut picture eventually! Yeah… The warped pic has been getting a lot of attention… Far more than my pretty pics do… There really is no accounting for taste these days!!!

Kol is too humid these days. I need to run off to the Alps or something.

And I think I will go and do some serious writing now. Have been pretty lazy of late! Get back to work girl!

It's raining elephants now. This is what I love most about the monsoons. Strong winds. Lots of thunder and lightning. The coolth that the less dramatic seasons lack. My favorite season of the whole year. Makes me want to fly. Sing into the clouds. Dream my secret dream. Sit on the window and just think and do nothing else. The monsoons -- exciting, passionate, alive, angry, intense, magical, dramatic -- I love 'em!

Overate Again!

I tend to do that often... Eat too much that is. Have just been eating since afternoon. Went and hogged at KFC this afternoon with Ma and Aani.

Then met Madz for "HAPY FRANDSEEP DAY" outing. She forgot to get the band, but gave a gift and a card. How sweet is that! I gave her a smile and that's all. How cheapra is that?! However, I rescued her from her iced tea, and gifted her my masala soda. Such a nice buddy I am sometimes (And also my own greatest fan! :D) After the non-alchoholic booze it was biriyani time. We walked to the biriyani joint, only to be greeted by gone-completely-beserk rain!! But we braved the monsoons and walked on. Stuffed ourselves with biriyani. And then went our ways.

The instant I came home dinner was served. Rolls. I ate again. Watched the middle of KANK. Now catching up on the work i should have gotten over with over the weekend. That's the problem with neing lazy. Deadlines loom larger than ever.

Sigh... I wish I was one of my dogs... spending my days eating, dreaming of chicken bones, staring out of the window, sleeping again... you get the drift.

Chomu Maharaj called. Had been worried that he was pissed with me for not taking his call that one time. Apparently not :D. For those that don't know, Chomu Maharaj is my all-time favorite guy. Ever ready to propose to the next girl he sees. And stealing chicken from whichever idiot looks behind to look at the Red Indian grinning at him. Great cook also. And he sent me a very nice "HAPY FRANDSEEP DAY" message. He deserves this paragraph.

And my life is a true comedy of errors. (This last statement pertaining to only the last hour of today. Will regularly recharge phone card from now on. That's a solemn swear.)

Dogs and Drains

This entry belongs to last weekend, and has been lying around waiting to be posted for sometime now... So here it comes:

"I got mauled by a dog today. Okay, so it wasn’t as violent as that sounds, but I’m almost convinced that this dog was drunk. First, it had a crazily waggerly tail (Remember the song: “How much is that doggy in the window, / The one with the waggerly tail?”). Second, there was no need for it to come after me. I was walking quite happily, all in my own world, mentally whistling at the monsoon breeze, pleased by the clean green trees.

Despite my obvious nonchalance, he came after me, wagging his tail behind him. I returned the smile in his twinkling eyes. Of course that was not enough. He wanted to be petted. I did that too. But this was the give-him-an-inch-and-he-takes-a-mile kind of a dog. He now wanted to jump on me with his muddy paws and play his own version of ring-a-ring-a-roses. I had no pockets full of posies, but I held his paws and walked with him for three steps. My friendly neighbourhood canine however, wanted to play... whether I liked it or not.

Paws muddy with red mud jumped up and stained my denims (and I was planning to wear them another day before sending them for a wash). My arms and palms were already mucked up with my attempts at indulging ol’ four legs. The nearest haven was the movie rental store less than two minutes away.

Summoning up all my past experience of ignoring annoying guys who proclaimed so-called “unconditional love” for me, I walked on without looking at this over-friendly mutt. He nearly followed me into the shop, but the door was slammed politely on his snout. I took my movie (some crappy flick called The Covenant) and with my nose in the air, so that I would not make eye contact with him, I hurried home.

A car full of boys laughed at my state as I walked back. I did not care. I came home, washed out the mud, put the denims for a wash, and sat down to write about the dog that “mauled” me on the first day of the monsoons in Mumbai, 2007.

Manu has the encounter on video on her cell phone. And when the car full of boys laughed at us, she was seemingly taking a picture of the drain. However, she was actually trying to take a photograph of the brilliantly blue kingfisher that we saw flying by the drain.

The drain is actually like a moat around a castle, except that it is much narrower and shallower. I like to imagine that there are crocodiles in there waiting to eat the first hapless victim that falls in at night when the power goes off. Perhaps when the people of the buildings of Polaris and Princeton (not the university... and yes, even housing complexes in India like such names) have altercations, the losing party gets thrown to the crocodiles, like in the days of the long-nosed Cleopatra."

Movies, Music, and the Mumbai Monsoons

Watched a handful of 5-minute movies on TV today. One was called "The Sunshine Girl". In the movie, a little girl is coloring the sun. But her crayon gets over (I think… was in an attention-fluctuating state of mind just then). So she tries to take the color from the sun. She stretches her hand out of the window, towards the sunny skies. As she draws her hand back in, however, the sun comes in too, seated on her palm. Instantly, the world is plunged into darkness. Her parents panic in the other room: "What is to be done?" A newsflash on TV: "Sun is missing". It isn't missing. It has rolled underneath the little girl's bed. She squeezes her hand in under the bed, reaches for the little sun, drags it out, walks over to the window, places the sun on her palm, and stretches her arm out of the window, into the darkness of the sunless skies. The sun is back in its place. The catastrophe is no more.

There was another one called the "Glass Eye". A man loses his glass eye, and it starts seeing the world in color. Of course, then his dog eats it up, and will probably poop it out the next day. Ughs for that thought, though the movie was rather sweet.

Yet another movie, "The Orchard" showed horror from the perspective of a tree. You might get scared if you are a bougainvillea or something. If you aren't, you'll just have to make do by appreciating the art direction maybe.
* * *

As I was getting home today, I was listening to this really catchy song. It gave me this sudden almost overwhelming urge to get half out of the auto, flay my hands about, and sing at the top of my voice. I would happily have run around a few trees singing myself hoarse for the 30 remaining seconds of the song. Then the music stopped, an annoying RJ began jabbering, and my urge to make a scene vanished into the moisture-filled monsoon air over the flyover on the Eastern Express Highway.

The rains in Bombay (Mumbai... It's Mumbai!... But Bombay sounds more prose-worthy somehow) are pretty dull. There is hardly ever any sound and light show (Read: "thunder and lightning"). It rains on and off. It is almost as though the people in charge of the monsoon showers tell each other: "There has to be a lot of rain. So let's just cut out the drama and give them some."

However, it is not the lack of drama that makes me hate Mumbai rain. It is the slush on the road. The rain water mixes with the sand and gravel of roads being constructed. Slippery mud gets formed. Toilet-deprived slum kids get rid of last night's dinner on the side of the road where the pavement should have been. And I have to walk through all that, in addition to braving puddle-water-splashing vehicles, to reluctantly get to the jailhouse we all call office.
